Sudan, Chad leaders to meet to tackle border dispute
font size

Top leaders from Sudan and Chad were expected to meet late Wednesday in Libya in a bid to ease border tensions between the two countries.

Sudanese President Omar Ahmed el-Bashir and Foreign Minister Lam Akol left Khartoum for Tripoli, capital of Libya, on Wednesday to attend the summit, initiated by Libyan leader Muammar Ghaddafi.

Violence flare up sometimes in the border areas between Sudan and Chad, with both countries accusing the other of supporting rebels against the government.

Deng Alor, minister of the Sudanese cabinet, told SUNA news agency that el-Bashir would meet with his Chadian counterpart Idriss Debby.

Sudanese Minister of Information and Communication al-Zahawi Ibrahim Malik said the visit came in response to "a generous initiative from Libyan leader Muammar Ghaddafi on patching up the rift and containing a security dispute between Sudan and Chad."

He expressed hope that el-Bashir's visit would result in solving all problems concerning relations between the two neighboring countries.

The mini-summit in Tripoli will also be attended by leaders of Libya, Congo, Burkina Faso and Central Africa.
