An Islamic Jihad commander escaped an Israeli assassination attempt on Saturday in the West Bank city of Jenin, security sources and witnesses said.

Ashraf Sadi, 27, was seriously wounded in an exchange of fire with Israeli troops which stormed the Jenin refugee camp in an attempt to arrest wanted militants, the sources said.

According to Israel's Army Radio, one Palestinian militant was killed and another wounded in the clash when the army tried to arrest two Jihad members.

A third was detained in Kafr Silat al-Dahar, south of Jenin, according to Israeli and Palestinian sources.

Israeli troops also raided another West Bank city of Nablus and arrested four Palestinians, the sources said.

Meanwhile, Israeli aircraft fired at least three missiles at central Gaza early Saturday, destroying a car but causing no casualties, witnesses said.

They said people in a targeted car managed to escape the strike carried out by Israel's F-16 jet fighters in the central Gaza town of Dir al-Balah.

Israeli warplanes also pounded fields and main roads in Bedouin village in northern Gaza, Palestinian security sources said.

According to the sources, the Israeli missiles severely damaged two main roads in the area and cut off electricity in Beit Lahia and Jabalia.
