Azzam al-Ahmed, chief of Fatah members in the newly-elected Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) said Monday that the current PLC would continue performing its competences till Saturday morning.
"There's no article in the Palestinian law that prevents the current PLC to practice its competences in legislation and supervision till the last minute of its period and it will continue till Saturday morning," al-Ahmed told the Voice of Palestine radio just before the PLC session due on Monday.
He revealed that Monday's session "aims at completing the PLC's work and preparing for the next council that would convene next Monday," underlining that "it's not considered to discuss any new laws, however it's the PLC's right to discuss any issue."
He added that "we don't want to give any chance for those who were afraid of summoning for a PLC session, we depend on the law and the PLC till the moment still has the complete competence."
However, the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) said on Sunday that it refuses any of the preliminary measures might be taken by the current PLC.
Hamas' elected PLC member Mushir Al Masri said that "Hamas warns against any early steps during this transition period in which the current PLC has ended."
