Iran asks Russia to delay nuclear talks: report
font size

Iran has asked Russia to postpone for four days talks on Moscow's proposal to enrich uranium for Iran on Russian territory, the RIA-Novosti news agency reported Tuesday.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mikhail Kamynin was quoted by RIA-Novosti as saying that Tehran had requested to delay the talks, originally scheduled for Thursday in Moscow, until next Monday for "technical reasons."

Western countries have backed Russia's proposal to enrich uranium for Iran on its soil, saying it could help allay concerns about Iran potentially producing weapons-grade nuclear material.

Iran hinted Monday that its decision to delay the Moscow talks came in response to the International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA)'s decision earlier this month to report Iran's nuclear file to the UN Security Council.

Javad Vaidi, deputy secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, confirmed on Tuesday that the country has resumed some work on uranium enrichment.

He told reporters that "according to the law passed by the Majlis (parliament), the president ordered the resumption."
