Archaeologists recently excavated a large number of dinosaur fossils in the county of Shuangbai in the Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Chuxiong in southwest China's Yunnan Province.
Experts say new dinosaur species may be found among the newly unearthed fossils. Preliminary studies show the dinosaurs lived from the late Triassic Period to the early Jurassic Period (180 million years to 120 million years ago).
According to Wang Guofu, researcher of Chuxiong Museum of Yi Autonomous Prefecture, a complete set of dinosaur fossil was discovered in the county, with length of 10 meters. It belongs to Jingshanosaurus of Plateosauridae Family. Along with the big one, some small fossils like limbs, paws, backbones were also excavated.
Archaeologists have brought those fossils back to the museum for further research.
Wang said the discovery of the fossils in the county may provide new material for further research on dinosaurs.
According to reports, in early 1980s, local farmers ever picked up dinosaur fossil debris in the county. Dinosaur fossils have been found in some eight counties in the Yi Autonomous Prefectures of Chuxiong.
