Vietnam, US have good cooperation in MIA searching: U.S. official

Vietnam has been more active in cooperation with the United States in searching for U.S. servicemen missing in action (MIA), and such a good cooperation has born fruits, Vietnam News Agency quoted a visiting U.S. official as saying on Wednesday.

Vietnam has made more efforts and offered wider openness in supplying the United States with MIA information, so a number of remains of U.S. servicemen were found every year, said Gary Kurpius, Senior Vice Commander-in-Chief Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW), a national veterans service organization.

Kurpius and three other VFW members are visiting Vietnam from Tuesday to Sunday. The U.S. delegation is to work with Vietnamese veterans organizations to foster their ties in MIA operation.

The delegation will also provide the Vietnamese side with information about the burying location of some Vietnamese soldiers, said Kurpius.

There are over 1,800 U.S. servicemen still unaccounted for throughout Southeast Asia from the Vietnam War ending in 1975, according to statistics of the U.S. Defense Department.
