Fatah, Hamas at odds on decision to freeze nominations
font size

Serious disputes emerged between the Fatah movement and the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) following a decision to freeze the nominations issued by the previous Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC), Palestinian sources said on Wednesday.

Azeez Dweik, PLC new speaker and a Hamas member, on Tuesday issued a decision to "freeze" all promotions and nominations issued during its last session of the previous PLC, which was headed by former speaker Rawhi Fatouh.

Hamas spokesman in the PLC Salah Bardaweil said in a press statement that Dweik had frozen Fatah's decisions and would study the legality of those nominations.

"After examining these decisions and it was being proven that any of these decision is legal and constitutional, then it would be approved," he said.

"We think that the former PLC speaker had issued illegal decisions and in case it was found that our attitude was mistaken then these decisions would be approved," Bardaweil said.

In response, Fatah's head in the PLC Azzam Al-Ahmed said that Dweik's decision was an unsuccessful start and the decision did not abide by the law.

Al-Ahmed denied reports that Fatah would contact Hamas leaders. Instead, he called on Hamas to retract its decision, saying that Dweik imposed himself a dictator in the PLC and such an action was totally rejected.

Al-Ahmed said any new PLC speaker doesn't have the right to freeze or suspend the decisions issued by the previous PLC. Instead, he has an obligation to first inform the PLC of any step to be taken, he said.
