Fatah protests against Hamas decision to sack PLC secretary-general
font size

Dozens of Fatah members and some employees of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) on Wednesday protested before the PLC building in Ramallah in the West Bank against Hamas decision to sack PLC Secretary-General Ibrahim Khreisha.

The demonstration came one day after Azeez Dweik, the new speaker of the PLC and a Ramallah-based leader of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), decided to sack Khreisha.

Palestinian security sources and eyewitnesses said the demonstrators condemned Dweik's decision and shouted slogans against him and the new PLC dominated by Hamas.

According to the sources, Dweik, along with 10 armed men, on Tuesday appeared at the PLC headquarters and informed Khreisha of the firing decision. The decision has caused serious disputes between Hamas and the Fatah movement.

In an interview with the Voice of Palestine radio, ousted Khreisha said the decision was a new methodology of the PLC headship, which started with a clear provocation.

"Dweik's attitude doesn't express any responsible or legal attitude followed by any official at his level," he said.

Khreisha warned that if the Hamas-dominated PLC is on the side against the Palestinian people and practises such steps of violating the law, the Palestinian society would face an ugly fate.
