Intel responds to AMD criticism of "false dual-core processor"

The world's leading chipmaker Intel has responded to AMD's "false dual-core processor" criticism for the first time.

"Both Intel's and AMD's are dual-core processor. There is no such things as genuine or false dual-core processor," Zeng Ming, general manger of Intel North China Region told reporter. He said AMD fabricated a "lie" about dual-core processor.

"AMD's criticism of Intel's dual-core processor is groundless," Zeng said. "There is no standard or definition for dual-core at the moment. So you cannot say other people's is false:"

Zeng showed a third-party test showing AMD dual-predecessor's inferior performance in handling multitask.

Zeng stressed that Intel is the "forefather" of dual-core processor. "In 1989, Intel's Chief Technology Officer set forth the concept of dual-core by predicting that processor will enter into an dual-core or multi-core era in his article. In 1995, Intel launched dual-core products. In May, 2005, Intel first offered dual-core products with mainstream prices."

This year, Intel dual-core products will dominate Intel's full products line. "70 percent of PCs and laptops, and 85 percent of servers will use dual-core processors, " Zeng said.

"Intel did not respond to AMD's challenge to a duel in the United States. If Intel wishes, AMD can have a duel with Intel in China through a fair third party." AMD said in its new "letter of challenge" to Intel issued yesterday.

Dual-core processor became the battlefields where Intel and AMD had fought with each other most fiercely last year. In latter half of 2005, AMD challenged Intel to a dual-core duel in the US, Singapore, but Intel did not respond to AMD's "invitation". At the end of 2005, AMD engaged a few organizations to perform public tests of their chips, and declared an overwhelming victory over Intel's chip.

Zeng Ming showed doubts over the test results AMD quoted. He said: "The reason we did not respond to AMD's 'provocations' around the world is Intel is an introvert company that stresses on improving its own products. That does not mean we do not have products to compete with AMD."

AMD has been holding promotions named "crazy about dual-core" and disseminating information about Intel's "false dual-core processor" in China since Dec 2005. AMD's action has obviously enraged Intel, the "old brother".
