A new case of avian flu has been found in Croatia, according to reports reaching here from Zagreb, the Croatian capital.
The dead swan found last week in the coastal town of Trogir in southern Croatia was infected with the H5N1 virus, said Mladen Pavic, spokesman of the Agriculture and Forestry Ministry, on Monday.
The ministry has taken precautionary measures in a 3-kilometer protection zone around the site where the dead swan was found, said Pavic. About 1200 poultry have been culled.
Authorities are to kill and incinerate wild birds in the affected region from Monday.
Last week, a swan found dead on the island of Ciovo in southern Croatia was confirmed to be affected with the H5N1 virus.
Croatia's first case of bird flu was reported in October last year when H5N1 was found in six wild swans in a fish pond in eastern Croatia.
Since the outbreak of the disease in some European countries earlier this year, Croatia has banned the import of poultry products from those affected countries, including Slovenia, Italy, Bulgaria and Greece.
