Shanghai tops in sustainable development capacity

Shanghai tops the country in sustainable development capacity, while west China's Qinghai Province the lowest, according to the latest ranking of 2006 China Sustainable Development Strategy Report published by Chinese Academy of Sciences on February 28.

Among China's 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, the top 10 in the sustainable development ranking are Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Guangdong, Shandong, Liaoning, Fujian and Jilin, which are mainly distributed in the eastern region. While the 10 at the bottom are Chongqing, Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Guangxi, Yunnan, Gansu, Ningxia, Tibet, Guizhou and Qinghai, largely in western region.

The ranking indicates western region's capacity in sustainable development is relatively low compared with the eastern region.

In contrast to previous years, Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, Zhejiang, Shandong, Hebei, Xinjiang, Chongqing, Yunnan, Gansu, Ningxia, Guizhou remain the same. Jiangsu, Jilin, Inner Mongolia, Shanxi rise by one place; Hainan and Tibet ascend by two; Shaanxi surges by four;while Guangdong, Fujian, Heilongjiang, Hubei, Hunan, Anhui, Sichuan fall by one place; Jiangxi, Guangxi and Qinghai fall by two.

This year, the report increased its comprehensive indicators in assessing sustainable development capacity to 233 from previous 224.
