Hamas politburo chief Khaled Meshaal called on other Palestinian factions on Monday to join the Hamas-led government to enhance national unity.
Meshaal made the appeal in his speech to the 4th General Conference of Arab Parties, which kicked off here Saturday, the official SANA news agency said.
Meshaal said the priorities of Hamas were to avoid disturbance in the Palestinian territories, form a joint government and reestablish the Palestine Liberation Organization.
He urged the international community, especially the Arab world, to continue providing financial and moral support to the Palestinians after Hamas swept to power with a stunning victory in the Jan. 25 parliamentary elections.
"The Palestinian people are seeking for peace that based on justice, the right to return and the establishment of an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital," Meshaal said.
Meshaal, who just wrapped up a visit to Moscow, praised Russia for breaking international isolation of Hamas.
"Russia should play an important role in order to restore balance in the region," he said.
Hamas was shunned by Israel, the United States and the European Union as long as it failed to renounce violence, recognize Israel's right to exist and accept previous Palestinian-Israeli agreements.
