More overseas Chinese communities condemn Chen Shui-bian's secessionist move
font size

More overseas Chinese communities have held symposiums or issued statements in the past few days, strongly condemning Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian's secessionist move to cease the function of the "National Unification Council" (NUC) and the application of the "National Unification Guidelines".

In Italy, the overseas Chinese community in Turin held a forum, strongly condemning Chen Shui-bian's secessionist action. They said he was aiming at achieving gradual "Taiwan independence", a move which was highly provocative towards the One-China Policy widely acknowledged by the international community.

Twelve overseas Chinese communities in Hungary, including the Chinese Re-unification Society and the Association for the promotion of peaceful reunification of China, also held symposiums on Monday and issued a joint statement, saying Chen's move to cease the "NUC" function has ruined the general trend of peaceful and stable development of cross-Straits relations, clearly revealing his attempt to seek "Taiwan independence" and split Taiwan from the Chinese mainland.

A formal statement from the Chinese Re-unification Society in Poland said Chen Shui-bian's words and actions had obviously betrayed the momentum of cross-Straits development, and had damaged the stability of the Asia-Pacific region. Any behavior which runs counter to the will of all Chinese has no chance to succeed, the statement said.

In a statement made by the China Council and the Association for the promotion of peaceful reunification of China in Laos, representatives said Chen had taken a reckless step despite strong objections from within the Taiwan island and around the wider world. His announcement to cease the function of the "NUC" and the application of the "Guidelines" stirs a serious provocation to the One-China Principle as well as the peace and stability of the Taiwan Straits.

Any people or behavior which split the country and go against the historical stream will be doomed to failure, the statement said.

Chinese communities in Australia also discussed the cross-Straits situation after Chen Shui-bian's speech. Representatives said the Taiwan leader had completely reneged on his promise of "five nos" to the Chinese people across the Straits as well as the international society, in a dangerous step towards the "Independence of Taiwan", which will never be allowed and accepted by any Chinese.

Representatives from the Mexican Association for the promotion of peaceful reunification of China and other Chinese communities also strongly condemned Chen's secessionist move on Monday. The re-unification of China is a general trend which is bound to succeed, no one can stop it, the representatives said.
