Charlton blasts foreign players for diving culture
font size

Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton has blamed foreign players for introducing play-acting culture into the English game.

A number of players have been caught on camera diving and the problem of simulation again reared its head during Chelsea's game with West Brom.

Charlton believes that the number of players joining England's top clubs from the continent is at the root of the problem.

"The British always used to be called the gentlemen of sport," he said.

"They would play the game correctly, with a stiff upper lip.

"We seem to have drifted into some bad habits that others brought with them.

"We didn't used to have any of this in our country until players from abroad came in."

Meanwhile, the 1966 World Cup winner believes that The FA should appoint a British manager to succeed Sven Goran Eriksson when he leaves his post after the World Cup.

"I would like to see a British manager," he added.

"But it's not important, it's not the end of the world if we don' t have a British manager."
