More overseas Chinese slam Chen Shui-bian's secessionist move
font size

More overseas Chinese organizations have staged symposiums or issued statements slamming Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian's decision to cease the function of the "National Unification Council" (NUC) and the application of the "National Unification Guidelines."

In Britain, anti-secessionist forums were held by a number of Chinese organizations including the Federation for Promotion of Reunification of China, the Manchester Chinese Association, the Chinese Education Promotion Society, and the Chinese Education Foundation.

Participants voiced staunch support for the statements on the Taiwan issue by the Chinese government and strong opposition to "Taiwan independence."

They stressed that secessionists would never be allowed in any way or by any means to split Taiwan from the Chinese mainland. The peaceful reunification of China and the great national revival are the common responsibility of all Chinese across the world, they added.

The Chinese Businessmen Association in Northern Ireland at an executive meeting blasted Chen Shui-bian for breaking his promise of the so-called "five nos" to the Chinese people across the Straits.

Chen Shui-bian, stubbornly pursuing his personal gains, attempts to impose the nightmare of "Taiwan independence" on the 23 million Taiwan people regardless of the feeling of the entire Chinese nation.

The adverse practice by Chen Shui-bian and a handful of others runs counter to the mainstream development of the cross-Straits relations and will seriously impair the fundamental interests of the Taiwan people. It posed a grave threat to peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits and in the Asia-Pacific region, they warned.

A Chinese community in Singapore held a symposium denouncing Chen's move to split China, while believing "Taiwan independence" was doomed to failure and that China is bound to realize national reunification.

What Chen and his followers did, representatives said, did not represent the interests of 23 million Taiwan people. The behavior which runs counter to the public will has no chance of success, said the representatives.

The Association for the Promotion of Peaceful Reunification of China in Venezuela said in a statement after a symposium that it firmly opposed "Taiwan independence" in any form, and the overseas Chinese in Venezuela were willing to make efforts for the promotion of China's peaceful reunification.

Tying the Taiwan people of 23 million to his chariot, Chen is plotting to gamble with cross-Straits peace and the interests of the Taiwan people to benefit himself and his Democratic Progressive Party, said the All-Africa Association for Chinese Reunification in a statement.

The overseas Chinese in South Africa also expressed their strong indignation, saying that Chen's attempt is doomed in a campaign against 1.3 billion Chinese people.

Chen will only end up hurting himself in this farce, the Ireland Association for Chinese Reunification said in a statement, adding that the peaceful reunification and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation is the common responsibility and steadfast goal of all Chinese nationals including the Taiwan compatriots.

Overseas Chinese communities in Germany also released statements to vehemently condemn Chen's activities aimed at achieving "Taiwan independence."

Oversees Chinese organizations in Colombia held symposium on Wednesday in Bogota, condemning Chen Shui-bian's plot for pursuing "Taiwan independence."

The "NUC" was set up in 1990 by the Taiwan authorities headed by Lee Teng-hui. A total of 14 meetings were held after its establishment. However, no "NUC" meeting has been held since Chen Shui-bian became Taiwan leader.

The "National Unification Guidelines" were issued in 1991, saying both the Chinese mainland and Taiwan are under the sovereignty of China and the promotion of the state's reunification should be the common task of all Chinese.

The guidelines also outlined a three-phase goal for the realization of China's reunification.
