A U.S. marine was killed on Tuesday in hostile action in Iraq's volatile western province of Anbar, the U.S. military said on Thursday.

The marine assigned to the 1st Marine Logistic Division was killed while conducting military operation in Fallujah, some 50 km west of Baghdad, the military said in a brief statement.

The name of the killed marine is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, the military said.

The latest death brings the total death toll of U.S. military personnel in Iraq to more than 2,300 since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003.
