Next cabinet to have 16 non-MP ministers: Haneya
font size

The Islamic Resistance Movement's prime minister-designated Isma'eel Haneya revealed Saturday that the next cabinet would include 16 ministers who are not members of parliament (MPs).

Haneya made the statements during a meeting held at the Bar Association in Gaza city, but were reluctant to specify the names of the 16 ministers and their political identities.

Meanwhile, Salah al-Bardaweil, Hamas spokesman in the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC), or parliament, said Saturday that the list of the next Hamas-led government would probably be announced by the end of this week.

Al-Bardaweil told Ramattan News Agency that a general meeting would be held between Hamas and the parliament's parties on Monday to discuss the formation of the next government.

He said that "we sent official letters to the parliament's parties, attached with the letters the movement's political program and a program of common issues."

"We gave them a period of two days to discuss our letter and then we would meet on Monday morning to discuss the final parties' positions over joining the next government or not," he added.

So far, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and the Independent Palestine have been apparently in favor of joining a coalition government led by Hamas.

There's also convergence between Hamas and al-Badeel bloc, which includes Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine ( DFLP), Popular Party and Fida party, to join the cabinet, he added.

The three blocs who ran in the Jan. 25 legislative elections only got seven seats out of 132 seats of the PLC.

Talking about Fatah's joining in the next cabinet, al-Bardaweil said there are disputes between Hamas and Fatah despite a convergence that had been occurred.

Disputes between the two movements refer to the political differences in both movements' programs, al-Bardaweil said, hoping that his movement would be able following the two sides' Monday meeting to form a national unity cabinet.

However, some local reports said that Hamas is very likely to control the key ministries such as the interior, foreign and finance ministries, if Fatah movement boycotted joining Hamas-led cabinet.
