Taiwanese demonstrate against authority's incompetence, corruption
font size

Approximately 100,000 people in Taiwan took to the streets of Taipei on Sunday in protest against Taiwan authority's incompetence and corruption, local media reported.

The massive demonstrators, defying chilly winds and drizzle, chanted such slogans as "Fighting for livelihood, Saving Taiwan," and "Against arm procurement."

At an assembly at the square where the Taiwan leader's office is located, the Kuomintang (KMT) or the Nationalist Party Chairman Ma Ying-jeou, former KMT chairman Lien Chan, People First Party (PFP) chairman James Soong, and senior official Wang Jin-pyng were all present.

They demanded Chen Shui-bian abandon his "pro-independence" stance and focus, instead, on improving the livelihoods of the Taiwan people's livelihood.

Student representatives, the unemployed people and taxi drivers took turns to denounce the authority's incompetence and corruption at the assembly.

Ma Ying-jeou reproached the authority for "not caring about the livelihood of the people" and the "successive exposure of corruption scandals," and protested against Chen Shui-bian's attempt of ceasing to function the "National Unification Council", saying that the decision was made exclusively in the interests of Chen himself and his party.

Ma said the KMT will be committed to promote the adoption of ten "laws and regulations" concerning the Taiwan people's livelihood in a bid to "save Taiwan."
