Ethiopia called last week in a London meeting of Ethiopia-Eritrea Boundary Commission (EEBC) for respect of a peace proposal put up by Ethiopian prime minister to resolve tensions between the country and neighboring Eritrea, said a statement from Ethiopia's Foreign Ministry on Monday.
"The meeting was consistent with its Five-Point Peace Proposal, " the statement said.
The Five-Point Peace Proposal, made by Ethiopian Prime Minister Zenawi, includes a major Ethiopian concession. It accepts "in principle" the April 2002 border ruling by EEBC, set up under the peace agreement reached between Ethiopia and Eritrea in Algiers in 2000.
The statement said the Five-Point Peace Proposal of November 2004 was welcomed by the international community, including the UN Security Council.
"Ethiopia's peace proposal is the most realistic road map for peace between Ethiopia and Eritrea and the sole approach for success both with respect to the successful demarcation of the boundary and for normalization of relations between the two countries," it said.
Ethiopia would continue to participate in future meetings convened by the EEBC in this same spirit and in good faith as long as these meetings are "consistent with Ethiopia's Five-Point Peace Proposal."
In recent months, tensions have grown with renewed military buildup along the Ethio-Eritrea border.
