EU ends investigation into BMW, GM servicing agreements
font size

The European Commission has closed its investigation into distribution and servicing agreements of BMW and GM since both car-makers amended their dealer rules in accordance with EU rules.

The European Union (EU) executive said on Monday that changes introduced by the car makers now ensure that BMW and GM dealers and repairers are not restricted in selling or servicing cars of competing brands.

It said it was also satisfied that all repair shops can become members of the authorized network, provided they fulfill the necessary quality standards.

"I welcome the constructive steps taken by BMW which will allow opportunities for innovative car retailing and more competitive after-sales services, thereby benefiting consumers across the EU," EU Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said in a statement.

EU's anti-trust probe was prompted by complaints from the European BMW Dealers' Association and the French, German, Spanish and Italian Opel dealers' associations. American car giant GM sells the Opel brand in the 25-nation bloc.
