EU names blacklist of unsafe airlines
font size

European Union (EU) avian experts on Wednesday completed the list of unsafe airlines to be banned in the 25-nation bloc.

The unanimous opinion of the Aviation Safety Committee is the result of an assessment of the information provided by the airlines and the civil aviation authorities concerned.

On the basis of this, the EU executive European Commission will adopt a Regulation on the European blacklist within the next week. Until then, the names of the airlines figuring on the list are not to be made public.

"We have just taken a decisive step", said Jacques Barrot, Vice- President of the Commission responsible for transport.

"We can make sure that the companies identified in the list will not have the possibility to enter Europe before they have resolved their problems," he added.

The EU's new regulation on aviation safety came into force on Jan. 16.
