Drugs found in Commonwealth Games on test
font size

Drug scandal became the first punch to the host's face as unidentified pills, along with syringes and vials, were found in the rooms occupied by members of Australia 's Commonwealth Games team at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS).

Federal Sports Minister Rod Kemp Thursday confirmed it, saying that he was told the substances were found in rooms occupied by members of the Australian weightlifting team.

He said tests were being carried out on the pills and other drugs, and it was hoped the results of those tests would be known later today.

"There was a forensic team brought in to go over the rooms, then on the following day, on the Wednesday, after the forensic team had gone through the rooms, a further number of tablets were found and of course they're now being tested as well," he said.

The Australian Sport Commission launched an investigation after a cleaner discovered the items in a room at the AIS on Tuesday and alerted authorities.

But Australia's Games chef de mission John Devitt said it was unfair to link the issue with the Australian weightlifters, saying athletes from other countries were also using the AIS facilities.

He said Australian weightlifters were tested for performance-enhancing drugs after they left the AIS.

"Some of our weightlifters, I don't know who, have been tested while they've been here in the village, so there's a testing program going on which is very comprehensive," he said.
