German legendary skier Gerd Schoenfelder made history on Thursday for the Paralympic Winter Games after he seized a gold medal of Standing Giant Slalom in Borgata of Turin.
With this victory, Schoenfelder has brought home with 20 medals, of which 16 gold, three silver and one bronze in total five editions of the Paralympic Winter Games, making him a record setter with the most medals in the history of the Paralympic Winter Games.
During this Turin Paralympic alone, the German veteran participated in four events and got three golds and one silver.
Apart from Thursday's victory, Schoenfelder seized his first gold of this tournament at Alpine Skiing, Men's Downhill - Standing on March 11. On March 12 he won another gold at Alpine Skiing, Men's Downhill (Visually Impaired) and he managed to seize a silver at Alpine Skiing, Men's Super-G-Standing on March 13.
"I don't think I'm going to break any records, " Gerd had said on the occasion of his first gold medal won in the Sestriere Downhill, "but I think I will get some satisfaction."
And that's what happened. On Thursday's competition, Gerd ran an impeccable first heat, with a 2" advantage over the American Timothy Fox, who then fell to eighth position at the end of the
competition, followed by a second aggressive heat, in which the German even bounced off track at one point.
For this feat alone, Schoenfelder has also become the biggest winner for the current Paralympic so far, narrowly overtaking Ukrainian legendary lady Olena Iurkovska, who has so far won three gold at the tournament.
On March 11, she took home with the gold medal at Biathlon, Women's 10km Sitting. Later on, she won another two gold medals at Biathlon, Women's 7.5km Sitting and Cross-Country skiing, Women's 5km Sitting on March 14 and March 15, respectively.
However, Iurkovska still has a chance to overtake Schoenfelder for she is expected to participate in the Women's Relay.
Also on Thursady, Lauren Woolstencroft won the gold medal at Alpine Skiing, Women's Super-G-Standing.
