Ecuador soccer official arrested for human trafficking
font size

An Ecuador soccer official has been jailed on charge of human trafficking, police said on Monday.

Police arrested Vinicio Luna, coordinator of the Ecuador national soccer team, along with two others, following an order issued by the Ninth Judge of the Pichinchi Court.

The most senior official in the Ecuadorian Football Federation was arrested as he left his home in the El Pinar Alto suburb of northern Quito,

The Migratory Crimes Prosecutor is verifying evidence collected including an eyewitness account of seeing Lula's vehicle carrying migrates from the Andean city of Cuenca to Quito.

According to early reports, Quito's U.S. consulate had received a request for a visa from Luna, for three citizens who were, according to him, players and trainers. But, after investigating his claims, they called in the police and accused him of human trafficking.

Luna had been due to travel to Japan, as part of Ecuador's national team for a friendly with Japan.
