Uganda's opposition leader files evidence to court on election suit
font size

Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye filed a series of evidence including a video tape that showed money distribution in President Yoweri Museveni's campaigns to the Supreme Court, local media reported Tuesday.

In the suit filed by Besigye, leader of Forum of Democratic Change (FDC), he wanted the court to nullify Museveni's victory on the February 23 elections, and to order a re-count and a re-run.

A Video recording filed over weekend showing Gen. Salim Saleh allegedly giving out money at campaign meetings is part of the evidence Besigye has filed at the Supreme Court.

Besigye, Museveni's main rival in the presidential race, said the election was marred by intimidation, lack of freedom and transparency while the 400 overseas monitor concluded the whole process was basically free and fair.

Museveni won a third five-year term with 59.28 percent of some 7.2 million valid votes, far ahead of Besigye's 37.39 percent.

Museveni has defended his victory by rejecting the accusations of rigging the poll in the first multiparty elections in the country for the last 20 years.

All the seven Supreme Court judges headed by Chief Justice Benjamin Odoki will hear the petition on Wednesday.
