font size

Initial test showed that a three-year Cambodian girl died of bird flu. If confirmed by final tests, the girl will be the fifth person killed by the deadly virus in Cambodia since 2003, an official said on Thursday.

The girl died in Phnom Penh hospital on Tuesday after sending to hospital from Kompong Speu province, said Ly Sovann, head of the Health Ministry's infections disease department.

Samples from the dead girl tested at the Pasteur Institute in Phnom Penh show the signs of deadly H5N1 virus.

According to World Health Organization statistics, 103 people in eight countries, mostly in Asia, have died from the deadly virus since 2003.
