WBA champion, top shuttler vying for Indonesian sports honor
font size

WBA featherweight champion Chrisjohn and Olympic gold medalist shuttler Taufik Hidayat come out the most favored candidates as the Indonesian sports governing body is preparing to select the Sportsman of the Year.

Chrisjon is nominated for his unbeaten record since he won the title in December 2004 while Taufik deserves the nomination after he coupled the Olympic victory with the world champion title.

The 2006 Indonesian Sports Awards include the best sportsman and sportswoman, best doubles and team, best newcomers and best coach, according to Agum Gumelar, chairman of the Indonesian National Sports Committee.

"Despite our disappointment with the failure in the Manila SEA Games, we must show appreciation to athletes with remarkable achievements," Agum was quoted Friday by Kompas newspaper as saying.
