Kuwaiti National Assembly ( parliament) Speaker Jasem Al-Kharafi said on Saturday that Kuwait's support to the Palestinian people would continue regardless of a coming Hamas-led cabinet, the Kuwait News Agency reported.
Following his meeting with the Syrian-based political leader of Hamas Khaled Mishaal, Al-Kharafi said, "Kuwait did not, and will not stop its support to the Palestinian people," especially in humanitarian aspects and basic needs.
"We believe in democracy and in the right of Palestinians to choose their representatives," the speaker said, adding that everyone must respect their choice and accept the results of democracy "regardless of whether we agree or disagree with Hamas."
"The National Assembly supports the Palestinian people regardless of who heads the Palestinian Authority," he reaffirmed.
Regarding the U.S. boycott of Hamas-led government, he said that the U.S. "cannot impose on Palestinians a regime other than the one they chose for themselves through democracy."
Al-Kharafi said that the U.S. had the right to disagree with Hamas' policies "but cannot fail to acknowledge the choice of the Palestinian people".
Kuwaiti emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah received the Hamas delegation earlier Saturday.
