Anti-Thaksin protestors rally at election commission head office
font size

Thousands of anti-Thaksin protestors Thursday morning rallied in front of the head office of the Election Commission (EC) of Thailand to demand the commission to resign for failing to take action against Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Protestors occupied the road in front of the Srijulasup Building, which houses the EC head office, leaving only two lanes for traffic. They called for the EC officials to resign, because they "did not take any action against Thaksin who is breaking the election laws."

The protestors were led by the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), which accused Thaksin of breaking the election laws for distributing cash and promising to give as part of election campaigns.

Chamlong Srimuang, a decision maker and leader of the PAD, said on the mobile stage in front of the building that police needed not to worry as protestors would not storm into the building.

Meanwhile, Thaksin, who just came back from northern city of Chiang Mai, entered his Government House Thursday morning while the protestors were rallying before the EC.

On Wednesday, Thaksin reiterated his willingness to hold talks with his opponents, including the former opposition bloc and the PAD-led campaigners to end the current political standoff.

"I'm still ready to have direct dialogues with them," he said. Thaksin also invited eligible voters to turn out to exercise their rights in the snap election on Sunday.
