FMs from Security Council P5, Germany to discuss Iran's nuclear issue
font size

Foreign ministers from the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and Germany will meet in Berlin later Thursday to discuss the Iranian nuclear issue.

The meeting comes one day after the Security Council unanimously adopted a presidential statement calling on Iran to resume suspension of all uranium enrichment-related activities within 30 days.

The two-hour meeting will focus on future strategy towards Iran, which reaffirms that its nuclear program is only for peaceful purposes.

Participants to the meeting include Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Dai Bingguo, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy and U.S. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier will host the meeting as Germany has been part of the European trio, along with Britain and France, to try to persuade Iran to give up its nuclear program over the past years.

European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana will also take part in the meeting.

The statement, which was passed on Wednesday after the P5 -- the United States, Britain, France, China and Russia -- reached consensus on the text earlier of the day, has kicked the "ball back in Iran's court" as French Ambassador to the UN Jean-Marc de la Sabliere described.

The statement, co-sponsored by the EU trio, noted "with serious concern" that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) "is unable to conclude that there are no undeclared nuclear materials or activities in Iran."

It called on Iran to take steps to build confidence in the exclusively peaceful purpose of its nuclear program and to resolve outstanding questions.

It underlined "the particular importance of re-establishing full and sustained suspension of all enrichment-related and reprocessing activities, including research and development, to be verified by the IAEA."

In line with the statement, IAEA Director-General Mohamed ElBaradei will, in 30 days, deliver a new report to the IAEA board of governors and the Security Council on Iran's compliance with IAEA demands, including the suspension of its enrichment activities.
