Heavyweight boxer Teofilo Stevenson has been named supervisor of referees for AIBA, the international boxing referees association, Cuba's official newspaper Granma said on Thursday.
Stephenson, who has won the Olympics and the World Cup for boxing three times each, will perform the function for the first time at the under-19 championship in the Moroccan city of Agadir in September, Jorge Guzman, head of Cuba's boxing assocation who is also on the AIBA committee, told Granma. He will also be the senior judge of the Beijing Olympics boxing contest in 2008.
Ambidexterous Stephenson was considered one of the best amateurs of all time, and never turned professional, is th eonly Cuban boxer in the 20th Century Boxing Hall of Fame, an award he received at the opening of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.
Guzman also told the paper that the April 29-May 5 third Olympiad of Cuban Sport will pay host to an interesting grudge match. China's Zhou Shiming, winner of the World Championship held in November in Mianyang, a city in the southern China province of Sichuan, will take on Yan Bartelemi of Cuba.
Zhou beat Yan Bartelemi in Mianyang.
The AIBA will hold a meeting at the sidelines of the event, Guzman said.
