U.S. adult magazine Playboy published its first Indonesian version Friday but it appears that local readers were not as enthusiastic to the down-toned version as predicted earlier.
The magazine is sold at 39,000 rupiah (4.3 U.S. dollars), more expensive than any other local men's magazines in Jakarta newsstands, featuring local girl Andhara Early on its cover.
The publishers kept its promise not to feature nudity inside the local version.
Curious people searched newsstands to find the magazine in the morning but many have dropped will to buy.
"Most of them lost appetite after taking a look at the pictures, " an unnamed magazine vendor was quoted by the Detikcom news website as saying.
However, the vendor managed to sell 12 rabbit head magazines in the first three hours.
A disappointed reader criticized the magazine for being "too polite to become a men's magazine."
"It looks more like a female magazine," said Agus, 30, a private firm employee in South Jakarta.
The Playboy publishing came amid widespread protests from clerics, legislators and top government officials who said the publishing was an affront to religious belief and fear it would cause "moral degradation" in the world's most populous Muslim nation.
Local publisher PT Velvet Silver Media has invested 4 billion rupiah (444,444 dollars) to publish the magazine.
