U.S. President George W. Bush's job approval rating remained low, despite his efforts in recent weeks to shore up public support for the Iraq war, a new poll released on Monday showed.
The Washington Post-ABC News poll, posted on the Post's Website, found that 38 percent of the American public approved the job the president was doing, down three percentage points in the past month. This was Bush's worst showing in Post-ABC polling since he became president in 2001.
Sixty percent of the American public disapproved Bush's job performance, according to the poll.
The public was even more critical of the president's performance in specific areas. On Iraq, 62 percent of those polled expressed dissatisfaction with the president, on health, 62 percent, and on immigration, 61 percent.
On economy, only four out 10 Americans said Bush was doing a good job, down eight percentage points in a month.
Half of the public disapproved of the way Bush was handling the fight against terrorism, an issue on which majorities of Americans had typically given him high marks until last year, and only 41 percent now said the Iraq war worth fighting, down five percentage points since December.
The poll was conducted April 6 to 9 among a total of 1,027 adults, and had a margin of sampling error at plus or minus three percentage points.
