UN, U.S. decide to evacuate nonessential staff members in Chad
font size

The United Nations and United States have decided to evacuate nonessential staff members in Chadian capital N'Djamena on Wednesday, where rebel advances put the capital on alert, according to reports form N'Djamena.

The United Front of Democratic Change (FUC), an alliance of nine Chadian guerrilla groups, announced in Paris Wednesday night that the FUC had taken control of 80 percent of Chadian towns and arrived in places quite near the capital.

FUC's advances had been confirmed by France, its former colonial ruler, saying the FUC vanguards could reach the capital in less than two hours.

Some UN agencies in Chad, including program of UN high commissioner for refugees and World Food Program have decided to evacuate staff and their family members by air to Yaounde, capital of Cameroon.

Around 20 Americans, who are family members of diplomats and company employees, will be evacuated in the following days.

No evacuation measures have been taken for about 1,500 French nationals in Chad, but a French high school in N'Djamena has been temporarily shut down Wednesday morning, said French ambassador in N'Djamena,

The instability in Chad erupted ahead of the May elections, through which President Idriss Deby Itno hopes to extend his 15-year rule in the central African country.
