Indonesian military denies buying arms from men in U.S. custody
font size

The Indonesian Military has denied the purchase of arms from four men, including an Indonesian, arrested recently in the United States for alleged arms smuggling plot, reports said Saturday.

Military Chief Air Marshall Djoko Soeyanto admitted the Indonesian national in question is a partner of the Indonesian Military and has been assigned to check the radar system of F-5 Tiger jet fighters held in the United States under the embargo policy.

"The contract on F-5 radar system inspection is the formal one and has been concluded. After doing his job, the man in question made a stopover in Hawaii en route to Indonesia," he was quoted by the Antara news agency as saying.

On reports that the Indonesian was negotiating the purchase of air-to-air missiles, submachine guns and ammunitions in Hawaii, Soeyanto said "we do not order for them."

The Jakarta Post online news reported that Hadianto Djoko Djuliarso, 41, who was arrested by U.S. Authorities, is a supplier of the Indonesian Air Force.

"I do not know why they were arrested, but I can confirm that Hadianto of PT Ataru Indonesia is one of our suppliers," Air Force spokesman Sagon Tamboen was quoted as saying.

Hadianto and Ibrahim bin Amran, of Singapore, were arrested in Hawaii on Sunday and charged with money laundering and violating U. S. Export laws.
