Ethiopia seeks China's support to tap huge hydropower potential

Ethiopian President Girma Woldegiorgis said Monday in Addis Ababa that Ethiopia seeks the support of the Chinese government in its efforts to utilize the huge hydropower potential in the country.

Girma made the remark while holding talks with Zhang Mao, deputy mayor of Beijing, the capital city of China, at the National Palace, the country's presidential office.

Girma said the support of China would be instrumental to enable Ethiopia tap its huge hydro-electric power potential.

He said the cooperation between the sisterly cities of Addis Ababa and Beijing would contribute for an exchange of experience, especially in the areas of urban administration.

For his part, Zhang said the Chinese government is working to find a solution for the problem of traffic congestion in Beijing, where, he said, there are around 28 million vehicles.

The deputy mayor expressed Beijing's readiness to share its experience in addressing such problems and cooperate with Ethiopia.

The Beijing city utilizes power supply generated nearby the city, Zhang said, adding that China would be willing to share its experience in this area also.

The Chinese delegation is here for an official working visit upon the invitation of the Addis Ababa city government.

The delegation will visit housing development activities as well as micro- and small-scale business activities in Addis Ababa.
