Senior Chinese official urges innovation in cultural sector

Senior Chinese leader Li Changchun has called for greater efforts on innovation in the media sector to help assert China's cultural heritage and expand its holistic international competitive power.

Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC) Central Committee, made the call during his April 18 to 21 inspection tour of the northern Tianjin municipality.

He suggested that cultural innovation should be carried out not only in its concept, content, and format, but also in cultural technology and mechanism to meet diverse needs of the public.

China must boost development of new and burgeoning cultural sectors in a bid to add charisma to its culture, according to Li.

The CPC Central Committee and the State Council jointly issued a document of guidelines on deepening reform of cultural system in January, requiring general art troupes, publishing houses, newspapers and magazines on culture, art, life and popular science, bookstores, movie studios, theaters, TV play producers, cultural intermediary organizations to gradually restructure into market businesses.
