A candidate for the position of the next United Nations secretary general on Sunday stressed the significance of a "balanced" reform of the international organization.

The UN reform is imperative and must be performed in a balanced way, in an effort to meet the interests of all the 191 member countries, said Jayantha Dhanapala, senior adviser to the president of Sri Lanka at the Boao Forum for Asia.

The reform is a "comprehensive process" and need hard work, said Dhanapala.

He called for the setting up of a peace and rebuilding committee in a bid to safeguard the work of peace-keeping activities and prevent repeat conflicts.

Meanwhile, the functions of the UN should also be improved, such as avoiding repeated U.N. resolutions and ensuring resolutions are meaningful and target oriented, he said.

Dhanapala, also former UN Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament, also appealed for reforms of the U.N. Secretariat and the personnel management.
