The Workers' Party (WP), one of the major opposition parties in Singapore, on Monday introduced another four candidates for the next general election, which will be held on May 6.
Abdul Salim Harun, 24, is the youngest candidate that the party has named so far. He is a sales coordinator.
The other three are 31-year-old information technology executive Melvin Tan, 36-year-old Lian Chin Way who is a regional business manager in a British software company, and 30-year-old Brandon Siow who works at Singapore Airlines Cargo and used to be president of the Students' Union at the National University of Singapore.
The WP has made public 16 of its 20 candidates since last Friday, and the last batch will be introduced Tuesday.
The Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA), which comprises the Singapore People's Party (SPP), the National Solidarity Party (NSP) , the Malay based Pertubuhan Kebangsaan Melayu Singapura (PKMS) and the Singapore Justice Party (SJP), unveiled a five-member team Monday, which is to contest a Group Representation Constituency.
Led by NSP's vice-president Sebastian Teo, the team members are NSP's Assistant Secretary General Fong Chin Leong, Cheo Chai Chen, who was elected Member of Parliament in 1991, Vincent Yeo and 39- year-old new face Muhamad Ali Aman, who is an executive director at a local company.
Having rolled out 14 of its candidates so far, the SDA will name more candidates before Nomination Day which is on April 27.
The ruling People's Action Party (PAP) led by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has made all its 24 new candidates known to the public.
The PAP, which won in all the general elections since 1959, aims to gain 83 out of the 84 parliamentary seats in the upcoming general election while the opposition parties, which also include the Singapore Democratic Party and the Democratic Progressive Party, have decided to contest up to 57 seats.
