Nong Duc Manh was re-elected by the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee (CPVCC), the 10th tenure, the committee's general secretary.

The CPVCC made the announcement on Tuesday morning, the last working day of the 10th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV).

Manh was born in 1940 in northern Bac Can province to a farmer family of the Tay minority group. He served as a forestry worker, and then a forest investigation technician of Bac Can's Forestry Department in the 1962-1963 period.

Manh joined the CPV in 1963. He was a student at the Leningrad Forestry Institute of the Soviet Union from 1966 to 1971. He became chairman of the Bac Can People's Committee between 1983 and 1986.

In 1986, Manh served as secretary of the provincial Party Committee. He was elected full member of the CPVCC (the 6th tenure) , and director of the committee's Commission of Nationalities in 1989.

He was elected member of the committee's Political Bureau in 1991, elected chairman of the National Assembly (the 9th tenure) in 1992, re-elected member of the CPVCC (the 8th tenure) and member of the Political Bureau in 1996, and re-elected chairman of the National Assembly (the 10th tenure) in 1997.

In 2001, Manh was re-elected member of the CPVCC (the 9th tenure) and the committee's general secretary.

At the first working day on April 18 of the 10th National Congress of CPV, Manh mentioned several socioeconomic issues, including the continuation of perfecting the socialism-oriented market economy, acceleration of industrialization and modernization in attachment with development of knowledge-based economy, reinforcement of national defense and security, expansion of external relations and active integration into the world economy, strengthening of democracy and national great unity, perfecting the socialist law-governed state, and preventing and combating corruption.

"Intensifying prevention and fight against corruption and wastefulness is the society's pressing requirement and the party's political determination, aiming at building up a clean, stable and strong leadership and management apparatus, and overcoming one of big risks which threatens the existence of our regime," he stated.

On Monday, the eight-day party congress elected the CPVCC (the 10th tenure) with 160 official members and 21 alternate ones, and then the committee's elected its Political Bureau and the general secretary.

The congress is to mainly elect the party's leadership board in the new tenure, define orientations for the country's socioeconomic development in the 2006-2010 period, and adopt the party's amended statute.
