Communist Party of Vietnam has more young leadersThe Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) has made a further step in making its line-up younger, when the party selected more young members for its leadership at the 10th national party congress, which closes on Tuesday. Some old members of the Political Bureau under the 9th tenure CPV Central Committee (CPVCC) voluntarily asked for being withdrawn from the list of nominees for the 10th tenure CPVCC, facilitating younger cadres to take the party's leadership, newly re-elected CPVCC general secretary, Nong Duc Manh, said at the closing ceremony of the 8-day congress. The 14 newly-elected political bureau members, including 8 members elected for the first time and 6 members of the Political Bureau in 9th tenure, are in the age bracket of 56-66, averaging at 59.9. Eight members of the Political Bureau in 9th tenure who were not nominated for membership of the 10 tenure CPVCC include State President Tran Duc Luong, Prime Minister Phan Van Khai, Chairman of National Assembly Nguyen Van An, Permanent Secretary of the Secretariat of the CPVCC, Phan Dien, Defense Minister Pham Van Tra, Director of the CPVCC's Organization Commission Tran Dinh Hoan, Director of the CPVCC's Commission on Ideological and Cultural Affairs Nguyen Khoa Diem, and Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Truong Quang Duoc. Among them, the oldest man is 73 years old, the youngest 63, and their average age 68. Out of 160 official members of the newly-elected CPVCC with average age of 53.5, 79 are elected for the first time. The CPVCC also elected 21 alternate members who are 43.4 years old on average. The 185 CPVCC members include 16 women and 18 ethnic minority people.
