An outbreak of Cerebra-Spinal Meningitis (CSM) in Tangaza in Nigeria's northwestern state of Sokoto has caused the death of at least two people, including a student, the official News Agency of Nigeria reported Saturday.
While many infected people are being treated at the Tangaza General Hospital, the Sokoto state government has dispatched a medical team with equipment and the required medicines to curtail the spread of the disease.
Dr. Abdulrazaq Gandi, director of Primary Healthcare of the Ministry of Health, also led another "follow-up" team to the area on Friday.
"Adequate CSM vaccines have been sent to the local council for the vaccination of the people," he said.
According to Principal Medical Officer at the Tangaza General Hospital Dr. Danmalam Chede, the situation has been brought under control thanks to the prompt intervention made by the state government and the local council to curtail the epidemic.
Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges of the brain and the spinal cord, most often caused by a bacterial or viral infection and showing such symptoms as fever, vomiting, intense headache, and stiffness in the neck.
