Talabani says deal with some Iraqi rebels possible
font size

Iraqi President Jalal Talabani said on Sunday that a deal with some rebel groups in Iraq to end violence is possible.

Talabani said in a statement released by his office that he believed "a deal could be reached with seven armed groups" to end violence in the country.

Talabani, who is a Kurd, said that he had met insurgents and held talks with them in the northern region of Kurdistan, but did not reveal when the talks were held.

Insurgents have been waging violence in Iraq in the past three years since major combat operations ended in the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003.
