Nepali parliament passes proposal to hold constituent assembly elections

The reinstated Nepali House of Representatives on Sunday evening unanimously passed a proposal to hold constituent assembly elections.

The House, in its historic first meeting on Friday, registered a Nepali Congress-sponsored motion to hold elections to a constituent assembly that will frame a new constitution.

The decision came after a four-hour debate in parliament . But no date was given for the elections to the assembly,

Meanwhile, newly appointed Nepali Prime Minister Girija Rasa Koriala Sunday called on the anti-government guerrillas to come to the peace process.

Koirala, who was sworn in by the King Gyanendra at the Narayanhity Royal Palace Sunday morning, assumed his office as the Prime Minister in the afternoon.
