Over 8,000 Zambians die of malaria annually: president

Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa has said that malaria is still responsible for 40 percent of all out patient attendance and 8,000 deaths per year in his country with a total population 11 million.

In a speech read for him by Vice President Lupando Mwape at the Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) 6th stakeholders meeting held Saturday in Livingstone, capital of Southern province, the president called on all sectors of the society to take part in addressing the malaria problem in the country, saying that effective and affordable treatment is a significant component of the malaria control program, Zambia News and Information Services reported on Sunday.

He also called for more international aid for his country to control the disease.

Mwanawasa bemoaned the fact that the most effective drug recommended and being used for malaria is expensive and costs 2.40 U.S. dollars for an adult case.

He said what is sustainable for the government is to start putting in place measures that will ensure effective, affordable and safe malaria medicines for the people.

He said Zambia needs about 4 million treatments a year with its poor economy, the cost involved is colossal.

''As government, we have come to realize that such a war can not be won alone without partners like you and others. I am impressed with the achievements you have made in the past and continue to accomplish,'' said the president.

He also said that Zambia like many other African countries is suffering huge losses due to malaria.

Speaking earlier, former president of Ireland Mary Robinson said it is shocking to note that poverty still deprives people of the right to health in poor countries and urged African countries to rise above the challenge.

She said while malaria has been tackled in rich countries, the problem is still prevalent in Africa and needs concerted efforts to tackle it.

She said her country has committed 900 million dollars to the MMV for three years.
