Poland's President Lech Kaczynski on Tuesday appointed deputy foreign minister Anna Fotyga to serve as the nation's first female foreign minister.
Fotyga, 49, succeeds Stefan Meller who resigned last month.
Fotyga told reporters after the appointment that there will be no change in the country's foreign policy, saying that she "will carry on with processes which are already underway".
Prime Minister Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz said Fotyga's appointment means that "we want to continue Poland's increasingly active foreign policy within the European Union as well as outside its borders."
A graduate of the foreign trade department of Gdansk University, Fotyga speaks fluent English and Russian.
