The United States, which has suspended aid to the Hamas-led Palestinian government, will provide 10 million dollars in medicines and medical supplies to the Palestinian people, a senior US official said on Tuesday.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will make the announcement later Tuesday at a ministerial meeting of the "quartet" of diplomatic powers seeking Middle East peace, said the official, who asked not to be identified.
"Today Secretary Rice will announce that the US will provide 10 million dollars worth in kind medicines and medical equipment," the official said.
Four million dollars worth of goods could be delivered as early as Wednesday and distributed to clinics run by nongovernmental organizations while six million dollars worth will be delivered via the United Nations Children's Fund to public and private clinics based on those with the most urgent need, the official said.
Washington has vowed to suspend all dealings with Hamas, officially named the Islamic Resistance Movement, until the alleged a terrorist organization renounces its armed struggle against Israel and recognizes the Jewish state's right to exist.
