Indonesia decided on Friday to delay its effort of considering the settlement for controversial corruption case of former president Soeharto to uncertain time, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said in Jakarta.
The President said that the decision aimed at preventing the ongoing dissension within the people on the case from worsening.
"So, I decide to set aside the consideration of the case. It is not necessary to find the solution of the case in hasty," he told a press conference at the air force base in the capital before flight to Bali for attending a conference of eight Islamic developing countries.
"The pro and contra on the settlement of the case has slowly risen, which it could lead into a conflict," he noted.
On Wednesday, President Susilo invited many parties from state high institutions, such as the House of Representatives, People's Consultative Assembly, Supreme Court and ministers, for consultation in an effort to make a stance on the controversial Soeharto case.
The Indonesian Attorney General's Office on Thursday revoked overseas travel ban on Soeharto and plans to issue a decree to halt legal proceedings of his corruption case.
Soeharto, 84, had ruled Indonesia for 32 years until being ousted in May 1998. Since then he withdrew from the politics and lived quietly at his residence in Central Jakarta.
