A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on Friday called for greater efforts to raise public awareness of the law and improve administrative competence of civil servants and governments.
China has carried out four five-year campaigns to publicize the legal system since the beginning of the reform and opening-up process, said Luo Gan, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.
Public awareness of the law was raised and social management based on the legal system improved significantly during the fourth five-year plan, which contributed much to social and economic development, Luo told the sixth national meeting on publicity and education of the legal system.
Greater efforts should continue in the publicity of the Constitution and laws and regulations closely related to the people's lives, market order and social stability, he said.
The publicity and education of the law should be conveyed by the most direct and realistic issues affecting the people, said Luo.
Officials and cadres should set an example in learning and practicing the law and the assessment and evaluation of legal knowledge, and administrative competence of cadres should be improved too, he said.
Luo and other leaders at the meeting also conferred awards to groups and individuals who made outstanding contributions in the publicity and education of the law during the fourth five-year campaign, which ended last year.
