Somali speaker appeals for assistance to end chaos
font size

Somalia parliament described the fighting in capital Mogadishu as unfortunate and appealed to the international community to intervene and help restore peace, Kenyan media reported on Saturday.

According to The People Daily, Speaker of the Somalia parliament Shariff Hassan Sheikh Adan asked for financial assistance and expertise in containing the fighting.

"I appeal to the international community to extend financial assistance and expertise to Somali government to ensure peace and stability in our country," Adan was quoted as saying.

Adan spoke through a press statement issued from Nairobi where he has been attending the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting. He also appealed to the international community to step in and assist Somali build institutions for lasting peace.

At least 130 have died in the latest flare-up in the war-torn country. The latest war pits a fundamentalist Islamic force against some anti-terrorism groups in the Somali capital.

Adan said the fighting was regrettable. "I wish to register my displeasure over the ongoing fighting in Mogadishu. I urge the warring parties to immediately end hostilities and think about the damages they have inflicted upon the defenseless innocent women, children and other civilians who had been displaced by this barbaric action," he said.

He said the federal parliament and government were tirelessly working out to exert its authority on the Somali soil.

Adan said the Somalia government has commenced the establishment of districts and regional administrations.
